Kashmir, 1967

One could do worse - much worse - than spend a week on a houseboat on a lake in Kashmir.  In 1968, I did just that.  Kashmir, whose sovereignty was contested by both Pakistan and India, has had a turbulent past.  During the brief time I was there, a curfew was in effect in Srinagar, the capital, due to the recent marriage of a Hindu and a Moslem, and the consequent not unexpected religious discord.  It was a shame that a place of such natural beauty and charm would be marred by peoples' belief differences, but it seems typical of the history of nations since time began.
