Paghman. Summer. Note flat roofs, similar to those of most
houses in Kabul, doubtlessly requiring
shoveling of accumulated snow in
winter.
Babur Shah's tomb. Babur (1483-1530) was the first Mogul ruler in
India, a poet, diarist, and military
adventurer, and descendant of Timur/Tamerlane and Genghis Khan.
He settled
in Kabul in 1504.
Paghman had two gardens: lower and upper. This Afghan
sits in a
masonry structure at the lower gardens.
Spozamai (Moonlight) restaurant/cafe. Paghman reservoir.
Note relatively contemporary
design of cafe.
Caravan. Upper Paghman. Many Afghan women hid their faces
when being photographed.
Upper Paghman gardens. Despite the starkness of much of the
country, which had an appeal of
its own, pockets of color and more
conventional beauty were appreciated by natives
and visitors alike.
